Nature Based Play

"Children cannot bounce off the walls if we take away the walls."

-Eric K. Kennedy

What makes nature based play so essential is how our bodies have evolved in connection to the land. We developed the thumb strength we use to write by crafting tools made from the earth. We developed the reason and logic we use to develop new technologies by observing the cycles of the sun, the seasons, and the tide. We developed the social emotional skills we use to build nations around the fires we built to survive the night. So we honour our ancestors by carrying on that learning.

Playing outside isn't a new concept, playing outside is as old as playing. No one has to justify the value of outdoor play for children, we can see their joy plain as day. What we easily miss in our observations, though, is the vital importance nature based plays in children's development. Every living being learns the essential skills to survive through play, everything from problem solving to balance & coordination to social emotional skills.

Our children gain

"Teachings are hidden in every leaf and rock."
